Microbiology in the times of Ecohealth

The Swiss Society for Microbiology hosted the 73rd Annual Meeting and Assembly in Lugano, Switzerland on May 28-29, 2015.

The Meeting’s theme linked human and animal microbiology and epidemiology with environmental and fundamental microbiology.
While One Health seeks the benefits of a closer cooperation between human and animal health, EcoHealth embraces One Health and extends it to considerations of sustained ecosystem services and health in socio-ecological systems. A broader perspective on human and animal health and ecosystems has a huge potential for many fields of microbiology, and the congress aimed to make all participants aware of this important topic.

Oceania Eco-Health Symposium and Workshop: Linking Peoples, Landscapes, Health and Wellbeing
The Onemda VicHealth Koori Health Unit hosted this Symposium on 9-11 December 2013.

This event, hosted by the Chair of Indigenous Health at the University of Melbourne, brought together four contributions to the future of Australasian civil society:

  • a dialogue on practices that support the relationships between peoples, landscape and social health
  • presentations on sustainable food futures and animal health
  • a workshop on an Australasian Chapter of international EcoHealth, in which all people are regarded as Indigenous, that is, a product of their environment
  • the launch of the book The Human Capacity for Transformational Change. Harnessing the Collective Mind by Valerie A. Brown and John A. Harris.

1st African Regional Conference of the International Association on Ecology and Health and Second African meeting of researchers in ecosystem and human health approach

The Conference was held from 1 to 5 October 2013 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The main objective of the conference was to contribute to the diffusion and sharing of knowledge between researchers, health practitioners and policy makers on integrated and transdisplinary studies that are related to health within the framework of adaptations to global changes.

The specific objectives were to:

1. Ascertain knowledge regarding the present causes of global changes and their consequences on health.

2. Update the knowledge of researchers on integrated approaches so as to better capacitate their efforts in response to the challenges of global changes and their impacts on health.

3. Experience the relations between researchers and policy makers within the framework of the link environment and health, the use and dissemination of research results.

This was the first-ever joint conference of African and Intercontinental leading scientific societies dedicated or working to improve public health and ecology.
